The “Promoting Peaceful Elections in Africa through the instrumentality of Make Peace Happen Campaign” also known as the “Youth-Make-Peace-Happen project is one of the programs of the Pan-African Youth Network for a Culture of Peace (PAYNCoP) enshrined in its bi-annual action plan, and designed for twelve (12) African Union countries including Sierra Leone, Mali, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Madagascar, DR Congo, Togo and Senegal, all countries where elections were to be held between 2018 – 2019. The goal of the project was to contribute to the promotion of peace during the 2018 – 2019 general elections period in the selected African countries, create awareness around the UNESCO-AU Make Peace Happen campaign, and increase the national membership base and spread of the PAYNCoP.
Out of the 12 selected countries, the campaign has been successfully implemented in Sierra Leone and Nigeria with support from the UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja, while it is at various level of implementation in other countries.
PAYNCoP through its Lead National Coordination organizations, The Centre for Youth Advocacy and Development (CEYAD) and Passion for Hummanity Sierra Leone, implemented the project in Nigeria and Sierra Leone respectively with the support of UNESCO Regional Office Abuja ahead of the general elections in their countires. Since about 60% of the voting population in the country are youth and therefore represented the true beacons of democracy and unity in Nigeria, it became paramount that this action be taken to help build a movement of PAYNCoP members capable of promoting a culture of peace, social cohesion and common humanism before, during and after the Election period.
The campaign was designed with five cardinal activities for the 12 selected AU countries namely: Activity 1: Map and reinforce the capacities of grassroots (Local) Youth NGOs or groups for the promotion of peace during election; Activity 2: Peace Dialogue Forums in Local governments or Districts; Activity 3: Young Citizens March for Peace; Activity 4: Media Campaign; and Activity 5: Election Observation.
Out of the five (5) cardinal activities for the continental campaign, national coordination teams choose three for their countries and ensured implementation.
